The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), an attached agency of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), conferred the GI certification to the provincial government of Guimaras and the Guimaras Mango Growers and Producers Development Cooperative earlier this week in Metro Manila.

The GI certification is the fruition of almost a decade campaign of the Guimaras provincial government, the mango growers, and the DTI-Western Visayas.

“Guimaras mangoes are unique to Guimaras,” said IPOPHL Deputy Director General Ann Claire Cabochan.

The  GI certification was received by Provincial Economic Development Officer Francisco Gentoral;  Joegin Galvez, senior agriculturist and provincial mango focal person; Felipe Gamarcha, general manager of the Guimaras Mango Growers and Producers Development Cooperative; and  Elena Quezon, former provincial economic development officer.

Guimaras mangoes dubbed as "sweetest in the world" have unique quality and characteristics attributed to the topography of the island.
