An 11-year-old girl suffering from hernia was given aid by the Antipolo City local government as part of its efforts in giving assistance to its less fortunate residents who are in need of medical and social assistance. According to Antipolo City Mayor Jun Ynares, Shecaina Jerez, a resident of Upper Kilingan in Barangay San Jose, had since complained of a bulge in her groin which she and her parents thought of as just a harmless swelling. Upon closer medical examination, the swelling turned out to be a case of hernia which is an abnormal exit of tissue or an organ, such as the bowel, through the wall of the cavity in which it normally resides. Aside from this, Shecaina was also diagnosed with late psychomotor development, which caused her to repeat her studies as a Grade 3 student. "Gustuhin man siyang maipagamot ng kanyang mga magulang, hindi nila magawa dahil sa kakapusan sa pera at sa layo ng kanilang tirahan sa ospital. Umaasa lamang sila sa kinikita ng kanyang ama na isang construction worker. Gayunpaman, nananatili pa ring masiyahin at positibo si Shecaina. Mababanaag ito sa pagiging bibo niya na animo’y walang sakit na iniinda (Even if her parents want her to be treated, they cannot do so because of lack of funds and the distance of their home to the hospital. Their family just relies on the salary of her father who is a construction worker for their daily needs. Despite this, Shecaina remained positive and jolly throughout her ordeal as if she's not suffering from any ailment)," Ynares said. The LGU brought Shecaina to a specialist to check on her condition and gave her and her family financial aid for their daily needs. "Sasailalim siya sa ilang laboratory tests upang mas masuri ang kanyang kalagayan at malaman kung pwede na ba siyang sumailalim sa operasyon (She will have a series of laboratory tests to determine her condition and if she is ready to undergo surgery)," the mayor explained. According to research, groin hernia symptoms include pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen especially with coughing, exercise, or urinating or defecating. Often, it gets worse throughout the day and improves when lying down. A bulge may appear at the site of hernia, that becomes larger when bending down.
