I have given them the glory you gave me

The Greek doxa (“glory”) renders the Hebrew kabod which literally means “to be heavy,” “to be illustrious.” It means the divine character and the radiant manifestation of God. Jesus, as the Son of God, possesses divine glo-ry (Jn 1:14). But in becoming man, this glory is hidden in his humanity, only to appear through miraculous signs or in his transfiguration on the mountain. This glory will be made manifest in his resurrection from the dead, when he will be glorified by the Father. Here Jesus speaks of sharing the glory with the disciples. And what is this glory which the disciples derive from Christ? Paul describes this as the adoptive divine sonship that human beings enjoy through the Son (Rom 8:16). This glory is the life of God himself. Salvation consists in the “divini-zation” of men: to be sons in the Son. Through Jesus, the human being is not just created in the image and like-ness of God, but enjoys a life which is of God. Gospel • John 17:20-26 Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying: “I pray not only for these, but also for those who will be-lieve in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me. Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world also does not know you, but I know you, and they know that you sent me.
