The quest for another shot at the Olympics begins for two-time world champion Carlos Yulo when he and his teammates compete in the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships slated June 10 to 18 in Singapore.
The tournament offers berths to the world championships set Sept. 30 to Oct. 8 in Antwerp, Belgium where it serves as a qualifier to the 2024 Paris Olympics. Yulo seeks for a second Olympic appearance after seeing action in the 2020 Tokyo Games, where he came close to the podium with a fourth-place finish in vault. But the Japan-based Yulo, 23, targets to qualify in the individual all-around where he bagged the silver in last year’s Asian Championships that eventually led him to the world championship stint in Liverpool, England. In the world tilt, he clinched silver in vault and bronze in parallel bars. “Goal ko talaga mag-number one sa all-around at maka-qualify sa worlds,” said Yulo in a recent online press briefing. Four of his teammates that won silver in the 32ndSoutheast Asian Games in Cambodia are expected to join him in the Asian tourney, alone with seven women’s artistic gymnastics and two from the rhythmic team. Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) President Cynthia Carrion is confident of her stalwarts particularly on Yulo, who went home with two golds and two silvers in the recent SEAG meet.
