Valenzuela LGU, DepEd launch 'Reading Camp 2023' for elementary students

Valenzuela City Vice Mayor Lorie Natividad-Borja led the launching ceremony of the program held at Gen. T. De Leon Elementary School. Through DepEd Order No. 014 of 2023, the National Learning Camp was implemented as a voluntary learning recovery program offered every end-of-school-year (EOSY). It aims to address not only the existing problems on reading deficiencies of the learners in both elementary and secondary levels but further nourish and sharpen the individual’s love for reading. The Reading Camp 2023 is a five-week learning program which is designed to guide and help teachers in teaching pupils who struggle in their studies, especially in reading. According to the vice mayor, the goal of the annual reading camp is to minimize the number of learners having difficulty in reading, and successfully transform them into independent readers. She also encouraged the parents to play an active role in the program and support the learning of their children. Borja also emphasized that no child in the city should be left behind when it comes to education, thus the government gives them all the support they need. The 64 selected teachers and 132 volunteers for the said program underwent a comprehensive training entitled “Teaching Camp” held last Aug. 1. It was facilitated by the Synergeia Foundation. It aims to equip teachers and their aides with appropriate and efficient teaching methods. Mayoress Tiffany Gatchalian, along with her children Tara and Liam, led a storytelling activity for the students during the launching ceremony. A question-and-answer portion was also held wherein the students who answered various question correctly were rewarded with P500 worth of gift certificates from the family of Valenzuela City Mayor Weslie “Wes” Gatchalian. The Valenzuela Reading Camp 2023 will run from Aug. 8 to 22, with 10 half-day sessions. To encourage students to participate actively, the city government said that those who will complete the 10 sessions will receive incentives such as gift certificates. According to the city government, the Valenzuela Reading Camp was first launched in May 2014 and has been running for six years, excluding the period of the Covid-19 pandemic. The reading program has benefited a total of 85,059 students, the city government said.
