Daniel Robert Hokanson, chief of the US National Guard Bureau, at the Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City on Saturday, May 20. Maj. Gen. Potenciano Camba, Army Chief of Staff, welcomed Hokanson who visited the Philippines to observe the country’s State Partnership Program (SPP) with National Guard counterparts in Guam and Hawaii. Trinidad said the Camba and Hokanson discussed the reserve force development and the best practices in the management of the reserve component of Manila and Washington. “During the courtesy call, General Hokanson stated the willingness of the US National Guard Bureau to conduct bilateral engagements with the Philippine Army especially on upgrading the humanitarian response to disasters and national emergencies,” Trinidad said on Monday, May 22. Meanwhile, Camba expressed the Army’s willingness to cooperate with the US National Guard Bureau in such endeavor as he acknowledged that the military’s reserve component is “a vital force multiplier for defense and nation-building.” The National Guard Bureau is a federal agency and an element of the US military that responds to domestic emergencies, overseas combat missions, counterdrug efforts, and reconstruction missions among others. The SPP, on the other hand, is a Department of Defense-sponsored program administered by the National Guard Bureau in partnership with Guard units from different states for nation building. The Philippines is the Guam Guard's partner state.
