The human person is known in the first place by the name given him or her. The name does not just point out the person but stands for his personality, his character, and even his mission. A Latin saying goes, “Nomen est omen” — The name is power or luminous sign. In the Bible, the name speaks so much of the person. Thus “Abram” is changed to “Abraham” because he will be “the father of many nations” (Gn 17:4). Out of reverence for the name of God, the Israelites would substitute it with Ha-Shem (the “Name”) when referring to the Lord. God reveals his name to Moses as “I am who I am” (Ex 3:14), the name that attests to his powerful presence. It is also mysterious as it reveals and at the same time hides something of God. Jesus associates himself with this divine name and power. He has protected and guarded his disciples with the Father’s name. He has taught them to call God Abba, Father! He will depart, but he will not leave them orphans. In his passion and glorification, he will be revealed as far superior to the angels “as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs” (Heb 1:4). He is Kyrios (“Lord”), the name that he bears with the Father. Gospel • John 17:11b-19 Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying: “Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one. When I was with them I protected them in your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you. I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy completely. I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.  I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the Evil One. They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world.
