ePLDT launches PH's first sovereign cloud

PLDT Inc.’s information and communications technology (ICT) subsidiary ePLDT launched the “ePLDTPilipinas Cloud (ePPC),” the Philippines’ first sovereign cloud on Thursday, Oct. 12 during the 2023 Philippine Digital Convention (PH Digicon).

As a sovereign cloud, ePLDT said it will host "highly sensitive government data and applications in a trusted cloud environment to help fast-track the digital transformation of the country’s public sector.” 

The sovereign cloud provides a domestic-owned and operated infrastructure for securing, storing, and processing data, in compliance with national data protection laws and regulations. 

Critical data includes classified information related to national security and confidential personal information of citizens. 

The Pilipinas Cloud is expected to enhance digital security allowing government institutions to control its ownership and process of critical data, and protected from unauthorized use and foreign surveillance. 

The platform, using cloud-based technology, also aims to combat cybersecurity issues and ally fears of cyberattacks. 

“With ePLDT’s technical expertise and experience in delivering multi-cloud and data center solutions, backed up by our unique understanding of the Philippine government’s requirements, we are confident we can ensure the seamless deployment and management of the country’s first sovereign cloud aligned with global standards,” said ePLDT President and CEO Victor S. Genuino.

Aside from security, the development of the ePPC also seeks to trickle down to improving overall technological capabilities of government agencies in delivering services, and improving efficiency and performance. 

“This affirms our support for the government’s digitalization push and our commitment to continuously power the digital future of the nation by providing the necessary infrastructure that enables inclusive economic growth,” said Alfredo Panlilio, president and CEO of PLDT and Smart Inc. as well as the chairman of ePLDT. 

The ePPC project is in line with the national government’s push for creating a digital infrastructure and strengthening cybersecurity to build a safe digital environment. 

“We look forward to the positive impact of ePPC in fast-tracking digitization and putting the Philippines on the world map as an emerging leader in cloud computing technology,” said Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Uy.
