In celebration of National Mental Health Month, the Department of Health (DOH), in collaboration with the local government unit of Sorsogon City and the Sorsogon State University, hosted the "Biyaheng Kalusugan (Health Journey)" event in Sorsogon City on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

It said that the event, themed "Feelingskwela," aimed to provide students with an opportunity to learn about the importance of recognizing and processing their emotions.
DOH Public Health Services Team Undersecretary Maria Rosario Singh-Vergeire emphasized the DOH's commitment to supporting Filipinos' mental health and well-being.
“Currently, we have 362 access sites for mental health care services nationwide, with 27 mental health medicines available at each site. Noong nakaraang taon, 161,570 service users ang napaglingkuran ng ating mga access sites na ito. May karagdagang 75 mental health facilities (23 specialty care centers and 52 acute/custodial care facilities) ding naipatayo (Last year, 161,570 service users were served by these access sites. An additional 75 mental health facilities were also established) nationwide,” she said.
During the event, various engaging activities were organized for university students to raise awareness about mental health, dispel common misconceptions, and promote active care for mental health and well-being.
Activities included the "Grid of Emotions," featuring truth or dare games; "Take One, Leave One," and "Mirror Loves You" booths, where participants exchanged encouraging messages and practiced self-affirmation; and the "Help Desk Health Hub" for peer counseling sessions.
DOH said the event had three key objectives: equipping individuals with knowledge and tools for self-care, fostering better help-seeking behavior, and cultivating a positive attitude toward mental health while providing support to others on their mental well-being journeys.
Participants received mental health booklets from Breakthrough ACTION Philippines and self-care workbooks from #MentalHealthPH as valuable resources for continued learning and personal growth in their mental well-being.
The DOH announced that the "Biyaheng Kalusugan (Health Journey)" will continue its "Feelingskwela" campaign, with the next stop scheduled at Mountain Province State Polytechnic College on Oct. 25, 2023, to conclude the Mental Health Month celebration.
Also present during the event was Sorsogon City Mayor Ma. Ester E. Hamor, Bicol Center for Health Development Regional Director Ernie Vera, USAID RenewHealth Social Behavior Change and Technical Team Lead Dr. Camille Therese Yusay, and #MentalHealthPH Ambassador Ms. Nicole Bejo.
