The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has cancelled the accreditation of a certified public accountant (CPA) who was implicated in the production and distribution of counterfeit sales receipts and invoices.
BIR Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui, Jr.said the accountant, Jennifer Cunanan Roncesvalles, served as the external auditor for four companies that issued CPA certificates for financial statements linked to the sale of fraudulent receipts and invoices.
In December last year, BIR and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) operatives conducted a raid on the headquarters of these four companies and seized large quantity of fake receipts, ready for distribution to buyers in Metro Manila and other areas.
In addition to the criminal case filed by the bureau against Roncesvalles before the Department of Justice (DOJ), her license is now under review by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), facing the possibility of revocation.
The BIR has been stepping up its efforts to combat widespread tax evasion facilitated by the use of fake or ghost receipts. This illicit practice has resulted in substantial revenue losses for the government, amounting to hundreds of billions of pesos.
Lumagui stressed the seriousness of the offense and issued a stern warning to all CPAs, urging them to refrain from involvement in such tax evasion schemes. He made it clear that failure to comply would result in the loss of BIR accreditation, PRC license, and potential imprisonment.
Furthermore, criminal charges have already been filed against the individuals responsible for printing and distributing the fake receipts with the as buyers currently undergoing audit by revenue examiners.
"The BIR remains committed to pursuing all those involved in this fraudulent activity, ensuring that both sellers and buyers are held accountable for their actions," Lumagui said.
