Marcos bucks scrapping NGCP franchise: 'Who would operate the power grid then?'
If he revokes the franchise of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) due to security concerns, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. would have another problem: Who would run the power grid?
Marcos bucked the idea of withdrawing the franchise of the country's current grid operator as it would not directly solve the concern raised by the Senate, which said that 40 percent NGCP shares are being controlled by the Chinese.
In an ambush interview in Ilocos Norte on Friday, the President "there has to be a good reason to withdraw" NGCP's franchise, but what might be more important to look at for now is its "performance."
"'Yan ang iniimbestigahan ng Congress, both houses, tinitignan natin kung talaga ba, ay pwede nating ayusin ang sistema (That's what both houses of the Congress are investigation. They are considering if we can fix the system)," he said.
Among those that need to be looked at is why the islands of Panay and Negros recently experienced power outage despite their "excess of power supply."
So, scrapping NGCP's franchise "does not make any sense," according to Marcos said. It would only result in another problem, he added.
"Kung tanggalin natin ang prangkisa (If we revoke the franchise), we will have to find somebody else to operate the grid... yung nandyan ngayon, tanggal silang lahat. Saan natin kukunin yung kapalit? (All its personnel will be removed. So where we will find their replacement?)" he asked.
"Kung basta tanggalin natin ang prangkisa, paalisin natin sila lahat, sino magpapatakbo? (If we immediately revoke the franchise, who would operate the power grid then?)" he added.
