Eight van passengers injured in road mishap involving three vehicles in Sto. Tomas, Batangas

SANTO TOMAS CITY, Batangas – Eight passengers and a driver were hurt in a collision involving three vehicles along Maharlika Highway at dawn on Thursday, May 18, in Barangay San Miguel in this city.

The police report identified the injured as Emilda Amis, 23; Romnick Robles, 28; Erica Joy Robles, 29; Dante C. Amis Sr., 34; Catherine Castillo, 34; Dante R. Amis Jr., 32; Billy Joe Amis, 27; and Andrea Amis, 35; all residents of General Trias, Cavite.

They all sustained injuries and were taken to the Cabrini Hospital here.

The vehicles involved were a cargo truck driven by Rudolfo Petallar Jr., 45, of Marikina City, a Fuso aluminum wing van driven by Eufronio Esteva, 51, and a commuter van driven by Dante R. Amis Jr., 32, of Dasmarinas City, Cavite.

Based on the investigation, about 2:40 a.m., the cargo truck and the wing van were traversing on the same lane toward San Pablo City while the commuter van where most of the injured were inside was on the opposite lane.

The cargo truck stopped and was signaling it would turn left towards the barangay road in Barangay San Bartolome.

The van's driver miscalculated the situation and failed to anticipate that the cargo truck was turning left, as a result of which, the van driver lost control of his vehicle which suddenly bumped into the right side of the cargo truck.

Due to the strong impact, the van also bumped into the left side of the other truck.
