How the stars interpreted Met Gala 2023's theme 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.'

The most beautiful personalities from different fields come together to celebrate the grandest night in fashion. Every first Monday in May, the Metropolitan Museum (The Met) in New York opens its doors for the annual fashion extravaganza, The Costume Institute Benefit, simply known as the Met Gala.
With the theme “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” this year centers on the life and legacy of the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. According to the Met, it explores “the artistic methodology and stylistic vocabulary of Karl Lagerfeld's designs through recurring themes across more than 65 years, from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019.” Before he passed away in 2019 due to pancreatic cancer, Karl left a great legacy in the global fashion scene, being the creative director of Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, Balmain, and Patou, as well as items from his namesake label.
From archival looks to bejeweled frocks and Choupette-inspired ensembles, here are some of the stellar looks from the 2023 edition of the Met Gala. Margot Robbie, Jennie, and Dua Lipa (Photos from AFP)

Legacy looks

With an event dedicated to paying homage to Karl’s works, it is expected that some guests will grace the event wearing some of his past designs. Among those are supermodel Naomi Campbell wearing a 2010 Chanel couture, singer Dua Lipa in a grand ball gown from a 1992 Chanel collection, Blackpink’s Jennie in a ‘90s mini-dress, ‘Barbie’ star Margot Robbie in a1993 spring couture, and actress Nicole Kidman with feathered garb from her perfume campaign for the fashion house.  Olivia Rodrigo, Florence Pugh, and Janelle Monae (Photos from AFP)

Black and white

Nothing beat a classic black-and-white look. It’s elegant and timeless much like many of Karl’s designs. And it looks like it’s the combo many opted for this year’s Met Gala. Stars such as Olivia Rodrigo and Janelle Monae in Thom Browne, actress Florence Pugh in Valentino, and supermodel Adut Akech Bior in Carolina Herrera played with sheer, textures, and 3D florals to add drama to their black-and-white ensembles. Bejeweled era

Looks adorned with jewels and pearls also graced the Met Gala’s carpet this year. Making a statement with embellishments are Kim Kardashian in Schiaparelli, Lizzo in Chanel, Karlie Kloss in Loewe, Amanda Seyfried in Oscar de la Renta, and Lill Nas X. Choupette chic

Apart from his designs and signature ponytail, many remember Karl as the loving fur parent to tortie Birman cat Choupette. Attendees such as actor Jared Leto and singer Doja Cat, in Oscar de la Renta, steal the spotlight with their feline fantasy looks.  Rihanna (Photo from AFP), Bad Bunny (Photo from Instagram), and Anne Hathaway (Photo from Versace) In full bloom
This year’s Met Gala carpet is also like a lush spring garden with numerous pieces decorated with rosettes and Chanel’s signature Camelia flowers. The best examples are Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny in Jacquemus, Anne Hathaway in Versace, and Rihanna in a stunning Maison Valentino gown.

Imitating Karl

Some of the attendees honor the legendary designer by imbuing their looks with Karl’s personal style. Actors Ke Huy Quan and Simu Liu add gloves to their look, actresses Stephanie Hsu and Kristen Stewart and singer Cardi B wear pieces with collared necklines styled with a necktie, while actors Jeremy Pope and Lily Collins don looks as a tribute to the late designer.
