“As we honor Gen. Vicente Alvarez today, let us be inspired by his example to confront the challenges that lie before us with courage and determination,” said Dalipe. A forum was held during the program to raise awareness among the youth on the life and contributions of Alvarez to this city. Forum panelists Ildefonso Torres Jr., city museum curator; Marlon Sebastian, Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas representative; and Gina Alvarez delos Santos provided information on the life of Alvarez. The celebration is institutionalized through City Ordinance 334 which set May 18 of every year as Dia de Gen. Vicente S. Alvarez. It also named a plaza in the center of this city after the revolutionary hero. On May 18, 1899, Alvarez led the battle at Fort Pilar here which resulted into the surrender of the forces of Gov. Gen. Diego de los Rios.
