LPA outside PAR may develop into tropical depression — PAGASA

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) continues to monitor a low pressure area (LPA) east of the country’s area of responsibility as it may develop into a tropical depression next week. PAGASA said in its daily weather forecast on Friday, May 19, that the LPA was still outside of the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) and had been spotted 2,235 kilometers east of southeastern Mindanao. According to PAGASA weather specialist Patrick del Mundo, the LPA may enter the PAR and become a tropical depression next week. In the next 24 hours, the LPA, which is embedded within the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), may bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over the Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. PAGASA warned of possible flash floods or landslides in these areas during moderate to heavy rains. Meanwhile, it said the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the ITCZ and localized thunderstorms. PAGASA advised the public to exercise caution during severe thunderstorms, as these may also trigger landslides or flash floods, especially in areas that are vulnerable to these hazards. Throughout the course of the coming week, PAGASA said the entire archipelago may experience mostly cloudy conditions with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. By Thursday and Friday, May 25 and 26, rain showers and thunderstorms may become more frequent over Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Visayas due to the southwesterly wind flow induced by the LPA. “Flash floods and rain-induced landslides are possible,” PAGASA warned.
