Filipinos were warned against the quiet but consistent increase of Covid-19 infections across the archipelago.

Health reform advocate Dr. Anthony “Tony” Leachon said health experts who are warning of the slow but persistent increase in the country’s Covid-19 cases only want to remind the public that the virus is still present. “We are not alarmists. We are closely monitoring the cases [and the infections] are quietly going up,” said Leachon in a tweet. This was issued after Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines (PHAPi) President Dr. Jose Rene De Grano disclosed that Covid-19 admissions in private hospitals are increasing. “We are preventive health advocates [and] we want to help people by educating them on the real score,” Leachon furthered. Similar to what was disclosed by De Grano, Philippine General Hospital (PGH) Spokesperson Dr. Jonas Del Rosario on Thursday, May 18, also confirmed that they are also seeing a gradual rise in their Covid-19 admissions. Philippine Heart Center (PHC), on the other hand, is currently implementing a “No Visitor Policy” citing the rise of Covid-19 infections as their reason for the imposition of this temporary measure. Earlier this week, Leachon once again urged the Department of Health (DOH) to reestablish the mandatory face mask measure to curb the viral transmission of Covid-19. “If people were given an option then they would opt for the easier way [which is] not to wear face masks. What is this singular solid solution to curb viral transmission in a population with waning immunity? It’s [face masks] for all. Simple,” he stressed.
