Driver falls asleep at the wheel, hits center island in Manila
A car flipped on its side after hitting the center island along Lerma Street in Manila, Friday morning.

A car hit a center island and flipped on its side after its driver fell asleep while driving along Lerma St., Sampaloc, Manila on Friday morning, May 19. According to Barangay Councilor Cipriano S. Paredes, the car was allegedly over the speed limit. “Galing siya sa baba [underway], mukha rin siyang lasing (He's from the underway, he seems to be drunk),” Paredes said. Based on the footage caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV), the black Toyota Vios with plate number NBR 6023 was driving towards España Blvd. at 5:02 a.m. when it hit the center island causing it to flip over. The right side of the car was destroyed as well as the streetlight standing on the center island.

The driver managed to immediately alight from his car. He did not sustain injuries. He said he was heading to Quintos Street where he lives. He also admitted that he fell asleep behind the wheel. Members of the Manila Police District (MPD) and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority immediately responded to the area and removed the vehicle to avoid causing traffic.
