More areas record 'dangerous' heat indices

Published May 18, 2023 10:21 am
Thirty-six locations across the country registered “dangerous” heat indices on Thursday, May 18, based on the monitoring of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). Of those that recorded dangerous heat indices, Thursday's highest heat index was observed by PAGASA in Calapan, Oriental Mindoro and Legazpi City, Albay at 47°C. PAGASA defines heat index as the measurement of how hot it feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. The weather bureau pointed out that a heat index ranging from 42°C to 51°C indicates impending “danger,” as “heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely,” and “heat stroke is probable with continued activity.” (PAGASA)
