CHED warns public vs suspicious sites, individuals giving out 'false information' on scholarships

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) - Unified Student Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education (UniFAST) warned the public against social media sites and individuals that give out “false information” about financial assistance and scholarships its offers.

“Exercise caution and do not engage in transactions with individuals or groups claiming to represent the Commission or UniFAST,” CHED-UniFAST said in a public advisory. CHED-UniFAST issued this warning amid reports involving the scholarships and assistance it offers --- especially about the Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES) program. “The TES is not a scholarship but a grant-in-aid program by the government that follows a prioritization scheme to qualify as a grantee,” CHED-EniFAST explained. Given the nature of the program, CHED-UniFAST said this is “subject to the availability of funds.” Given this, all state universities and colleges (SUCs), CHED-recognized local universities and colleges (LUCs), and private higher education institutions with an existing memorandum of agreement and compliant with all the requirements of CHED-UniFAST are the “only ones eligible to implement TES.” CHED-UniFAST also urged the public to refer only to official websites and verified accounts for any information or announcements related to programs being implemented by the commission. The public was also urged to report any fraudulent or suspicious activity to CHED and its Regional Offices or the UniFAST Secretariat and its Regional Coordinators for them to “respond appropriately.” Signed into law in October 2015, the UniFAST (also known as Republic Act No. 10687) reconciles, improves, strengthens, expands, and puts under one body all government-funded modalities of Student Financial Assistance Programs (StuFAPs) for tertiary education – and special purpose education assistance – in both public and private institutions. These modalities include scholarships, grants-in-aid, student loans, and other specialized forms of StuFAPs formulated by the UniFAST Board.
