Majority of Filipinos continue to trust and approve of the performance of the Philippine National Police (PNP), according to the latest “Tugon ng Masa” survey conducted by OCTA Research.
The non-commissioned survey, which was conducted from March 24 to 28 found that 80 percent of Filipinos continue to trust the PNP (21 percent “strongly trust,” 59 percent “somewhat trust”), while only five percent distrust the organization (4 percent “somewhat distrust,” 1 percent “strongly distrust”).
Meanwhile, 15 percent expressed “ambivalence” over PNP’s trustworthiness.

“In different areas across the country, Visayas and Mindanao respondents were more trustworthy of the PNP [both] at 89 percent, but only 67 percent in National Capital Region said that they trust the police,” OCTA pointed out. “Per demographic, Class E respondents reported the highest trust ratings among the police (90 percent), while class ABC were the lowest (74 percent) in terms of trust ratings,” it added.

“The PNP’s trust rating also reflected in its performance rating, with nearly nine out of 10 Visayas and Mindanao respondents (87 percent) saying that they are satisfied with the PNP’s response, while nearly seven out of 10 NCR respondents are satisfied with the police’s performance (65 percent),” OCTA said.

PNP approval rating at 79%
In the March survey, OCTA also found that 79 percent of Filipinos approve of the performance of the PNP (9 percent “very satisfied,” 56 percent “somewhat satisfied”). Only 6 percent were dissatisfied with the PNP’s performance (5 percent “somewhat dissatisfied,” 1 percent “very dissatisfied). Meanwhile, 15 percent of Filipinos “cannot say” if they are satisfied or dissatisfied with the police force.

41% of Filipinos see significant improvement in PNP’s implementation of peace and order
According to OCTA, a “significant minority” of Filipinos (41 percent) said that they saw an improvement in terms of the implementation of peace and order by the PNP, while only 9 percent said that it has worsened. However, 48 percent said that the PNP’s performance in terms of peace and order has not changed. OCTA pointed out that 41 percent of Filipinos also said that the PNP’s response to criminality has improved, 8 percent said it has worsened, and 46 percent said it has not changed. The Tugon ng Masa survey used face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adult respondents nationwide and has a margin of error of +/-3 percent.
