OFFICIALS of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas led by Assistant Secretary Antonio Veloso Jr. (left), spokesperson lawyer Kaye Yap, Compostela Councilor Cheryl Sereño, and Assistant Secretary Mark Peter Quilante lead the launching of the ‘Bayan Bangon Muli (BBM): A Caravan of Government Services for the People of the Visayas’ on Wednesday, May 17, at the OPAV office in Mandaue City. (Calvin D. Cordova) OPAV, headed by Undersecretary Terence Calatrava, said the BBM caravan will be held in various areas in the Visayas with the aim of making government services more accessible to the public. The inaugural edition of the caravan will be held on May 21 in Barangay Canamucan, Compostela town, northern Cebu. During the caravan, the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) based here will hold a blood-letting activity. Co-organized by the municipality of Compostela led by Mayor Felijur Quiño, VSMMC-Blood Service Unit, and Tingog party-list, the 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. activity will also give the public a chance to transact with the Philippine Statistics Authority, Department of Labor and Employment, National Telecommunications Commission, Department of Information and Communications Technology, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, Bureau of Internal Revenue, and Technical Education Skills and Development Authority. “We want to bring government services closer to the people through this caravan. With this, the public can save money and time because they can avail of these services at their doorstep,” said lawyer Kaye Yap, spokesperson of OPAV. Yap said the caravan is open not just for Compostela residents but also to other localities. BBM caravans will also be held in other areas in the Visayas. “We are grateful to our partner agencies. We are looking forward to more events like this. This is just a launching,” said Yap. Assistant Secretary Mark Peter Quilaneta said the BBM caravan is just the start of bigger programs that OPAV will undertake in the future. “Usec. Terence has been envisioning this project. It is a prelude to one more bigger project, the caravan on wheels which will be going all over the Visayas. We are still testing the waters but the goal is to deliver government services especially to the far-flung areas,” said Quilaneta.
