BACOLOD CITY – A farmer was hacked to death by his 29-year-old distant relative in Barangay Minautok, Calatrava, Negros Occidental on Monday, May 15.

Jesus Alba, deputy chief of the Calatrava Municipal Police Station, said that Maanu was drunk when he went to the house of the suspect Junrey Mahinay. The victim was looking for the suspect’s father to confront him for allegedly gossiping about him that he’s a nobody, Alba said. When the suspect told him that his father was not at home, the victim allegedly challenged Mahinay into a fight, leading to a heated argument. A commotion ensued after the victim allegedly hacked the suspect in the shoulder, prompting the suspect to fight back by also hacking the victim in the head, Alba said. Alba said that Mahinay suffered minor injuries and surrendered to barangay officials. He was turned over to the police. He said the suspect will be released from police custody if no charges will be filed against him within the 36-hour reglementary detention.
