PHNOM PENH, Cambodia—Vanessa Sarno showed why she is being hailed as Philippine weightlifting’s next big thing after capturing the gold medal in record-breaking fashion in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games at the National Olympic Stadium here Monday, May 15.

Sarno, just 19, hardly flexed her muscles in successfully defending her title in the women’s 71kg with a total lift of 225 kilos, outclassing Thailand’s Thipwara Chontavin and Indonesia’s Restu Anggi, who posted 208 and 206 kilos, respectively. Still fresh from her stint in the Asian Championships in Jinju, Korea last week that won her the silver, Sarno erased her SEAG mark of 104 kilos in snatch by lifting 106 on her third attempt to lead the small, four-player field. The Bohol native initially listed 125 kilos on her first attempt on clean & jerk, but lowered it to 120 kilos after seeing that she could already capture the gold with the said weight. After successfully lifting it on her way to the gold, she opted to pass her remaining two attempts and not risk breaking her Games records as she was coming off from last week’s Asian tourney.
