Gilas far from satisfied even after beating Indonesia: 'We came here to win the gold'
Gilas Pilipinas may have plenty of reasons to be happy after exacting a sweet payback against Indonesia – the same team that ended the country’s reign in the last edition of the Southeast Asian Games – but the Nationals are still in no mood for any kind of celebration.

To the coaches, the players, even down to the utility staff, there’s a consensus belief in the atmosphere that there’s still nothing to celebrate yet even after a dramatic 84-76 win over the Timnas. As the late Kobe Bryant said it, "job’s not finished" yet for Gilas. “We came here to win the gold,” insisted Gilas head coach Chot Reyes after the game. “We thought it would be against Indonesia but like I said, in a competition anything can happen so it turns out now it has to be against Cambodia so we have to do what we have to do,” he added Cambodia, indeed, earned its right to be in the gold medal match after topping the group stage with a perfect 2-0 record before dismantling a regional favorite in Thailand in the semifinals. Armed with a slew of naturalized players, Cambodia has also given Gilas a taste of its might by way of a 79-68 triumph which also happened to be the Nationals' only loss so far in the tournament. “I think we all knew from the first round that Cambodia is the team to beat. Looking at their lineup right there they are deep, they have six, seven Americans. They are athletic, they are deep, we all knew that,” said Reyes. While Gilas is happy to finally get back at the defending champion, Gilas must turn its focus to the bigger task at hand. And that is to find a way to take down the hosts. “We all knew that to get a chance at Cambodia again, we had to get by Indonesia .So again 50 percent of the job is done but the toughest 50 percent remains. But to give us a chance to win, first we have to get there and luckily we got ourselves,” explained Reyes. With the short turnaround with the Finals scheduled in less than 24 hours after the game against Indonesia, Reyes and his crew need to devise a plan to ensure that disappointing loss to Cambodia, which even drew the ire of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas chairman emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan, will not happen again. “We have to rest, we have to recover well and then get the film. We'll spend another sleepless night with the coaching staff tonight to prepare the players for tomorrow and see what we can do. We all know how strong Cambodia is, hopefully, we can get ourselves a chance,” he added.
