Career diplomat is new PH envoy to UN; four new ambassadors named

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has appointed Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Carlos Soretta as the Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, Switzerland, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said.

He also named the country’s new ambassadors to India, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and the Portugese Republic.
On Monday, May 15, Malacañang announced the appointment of former consul general of the Philippines in Shanghai Josel Ignacio as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to India.
Ignacio will have a “cancuffent jurisdiction” over the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, a Facebook post from PCO said.
The Palace also named Maria Angela Ponce as the new Philippine Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Malaysia.
In an appointment dated May 11, the PCO released the latest list of Marcos appointees in the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
PCO said Marcos also appointed Renato Pedro Villa as the country’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
His appointment came with concurrent jurisdiction over the Republic of Yemen.
Marcos likewise designated Paul Raymund Cortes as AEP to the Portugese Republic with concurrent jurisdiction over the Republics of Caba Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, and Angola.
