An Epicurean adventure of flavors around Asia at Asian Eats

Various authentic Asian dishes were served at the booths individually highlighting their countries.

From April 28 to 30, 2023, Asia Society Philippines hosted a weekend food festival highlighting Asia's myriad flavors at the Grand Atrium of Shangri La Plaza. Asian Eats 2023 is a collaboration between Asia Society Philippines and various Asian embassies in Manila who put together a curated mix of merchants highlighting the diverse cuisine of Asia. Asian Eats 2023 officially opened with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony led by Doris Magsaysay-Ho, Chair, Asia Society Philippines; Christopher Lim, Austrade; Phetsamone Souliyavong, Embassy of Lao PDR; HE Hoang Huy Chung, Ambassador of Viet Nam; HE Dato Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino bin Anthony, Ambassador of Malaysia; Johnny Rios, Shangri La; HE Tull Traisorat, Ambassador of Thailand; Sandeep Uppal, HSBC; Jay Campos, NutriAsia; HE Hae Kyong Yu, Ambassador of Australia; First Secretary Kannan, Embassy of India; HE Agus Widjojo, Ambassador of Indonesia; Chef Tatung Sarthou; and Fernando Zobel de Ayala, Vice Chair, Asia Society Philippines

Asian Eats was presented in cooperation with HSBC, NutriAsia, and Shangri-La Plaza. It was made possible through the support of the Embassies of Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam; as well as Austrade and KCCP. The three-day festival was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Asia Society Philippines’ chairperson Doris Magsaysay-Ho, co-chair Fernando Zobel de Ayala, HSBC’s CEO and president Sandeep Uppal, and Jay Campos for NutriAsia. Various authentic Asian dishes were served at the booths individually highlighting their countries. Festival goers got to enjoy dishes offered in the Indonesian booth from Bakmi Nyonya and Rumah Makan Padang Huang Jia. A variety of Malaysian dishes were served by Berjaya Makati Hotel and the Ladies of Perwakilan. Favorites from Thai cuisine, such as Thai Milk Tea and Mango Sticky Rice were available at the booth of Thai Plate and ChaTraMue. Vietnamese favorites like Pho were served by Em Ha Noi. Vietnamese coffee was present at the Highlands Coffee’s pop-up cart. Authentic Lao cuisine, which is rarely found in the Metro, was served by the ladies of the Embassy of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. The aromatic spices and the essence of Indian cuisine at Flavors Indian and Mediterranean Cuisine. Favorites from East Asian cuisines were also available during the food festival. Guests are treated to the comfort of Japanese food from Botejyu and South Korean dishes from Kaya; and had the chance to pick up bottles of Australian wine, cheese, and gourmet products for a wine and cheese party from Unitetris and Silverwave Corporation. Well-loved Filipino sauces and condiments were available at the NutriAsia Booth. And at the Filipino booth, a selection of Filipino pastries alongside “Simpol” cookbooks and Chef Tatung’s newest food venture, TinDel. Puppet and Dance Performance by Prof. Carlito Camahalan Amalla with the Tinampuso
The main stage featured various cultural performances from Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, and Prof. Carlito Camahalan Amalla with the Tinampuso; and a cooking demonstration by award-winning chef, best-selling author and culinary heritage advocate, Chef Myke “Tatung” Sarthou making cooking Filipino food “Simpol.” The festival was a true adventure through Asia with HSBC’s passport where participants had the chance to win prizes at their booth; and NOM showcased the community of foodies, recipes, shops, and activities on the NOM App with freebies at its booth.
