Magnitude 4.3 quake hits Zamboanga del Sur


A 4.3-magnitude earthquake hit Zamboanga del Sur province on Sunday night, May 14, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

In an earthquake bulletin issued on Sunday, Phivolcs said the quake struck 16 kilometers southeast of Tabina, Zamboanga del Sur around 8:44 p.m.

The tremor was felt at Intensity III (weak) inTigbao, Sominot, Josefina, and Pitogo in Zamboanga del Sur and Intensity II (slightly felt) in Kumalarang and Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur.

Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity IV in Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte; Intensity II in Kiamba, Sarangani and Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte; and Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in Alamada in Cotabato, Tampakan in South Cotabato, and Molave in Zamboanga del Sur.

Itsaid the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

However, Phivolcs does not expect damage or aftershocks because of this earthquake.
