De Lima honors late sister-in-law

Former senator Leila de Lima has honored her late sister-in-law, Marianne, saying she would have been ecstatic over her acquittal in her second drug case.  On May 12, the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 204 dismissed a drug case filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) under the Duterte administration in 2017 against De Lima and Ronnie Dayan.  Former senator Leila de Lima at the Muntinlupa Hall of Justice on May 12 (Contributed photo) “Yesterday, May 12, I was bestowed the wonderful Grace of a Court-decreed exoneration from one of the spurious drug cases filed against me,” said De Lima in a note written from her detention facility in Camp Crame.  She said, “Yesterday, we also commemorated the death anniversary of my dear sister-in-law, Marianne, wife of brother, Vicboy. Sabi nga ni Vicboy, who joined me in yesterday's momentous proceedings, siguradong masayang masaya ngayon si Marianne (Like what was said by Vicboy, who joined me in yesterday's momentous proceedings, I’m sure Marianne is happy now).”   “Along with our dear Daddy and other dearly departed loved ones, I can imagine Marianne, in her characteristic lively comportment, leaping with joy over the great news of my acquittal. She might not have lived long enough to see and cherish these developments unravelling before us, signaling my freedom, but I'm certain that she's been steadfastly doing her share in imploring for God's Divine help for her Ate Leila's eventual vindication,” De Lima added.  Case 17-165 accused De Lima and Dayan of conspiracy to commit illegal drug trading and receiving P10 million, which allegedly came from the proceeds of illegal drug trading at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa.  The court acquitted De Lima and Dayan mainly on the basis of the recantation of former Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) officer-in-charge Rafael Ragos, they key government witness in the case, who originally claimed he delivered P10 million to De Lima’s house in Paranaque in November and December 2012.  Ragos signed an affidavit in April last year to recant all his testimonies and affidavits against De Lima and Dayan, saying they were innocent of the charges.  The DOJ filed three cases against De Lima in 2017, all for illegal drug trading, which were later changed to conspiracy to commit illegal drug trading.  One of the cases, 17-166, was dismissed by the Muntinlupa RTC Branch 205 in February 2021 when it granted De Lima’s demurrer to evidence.  The remaining pending case is 17-67, which is being heard by the Muntinlupa RTC Branch 256. The court will resolve De Lima’s petition for bail. If the bail petition is granted, De Lima will be freed from detention.  She has been detained for more than six years after the original judge who handled case 17-165 issued a warrant of arrest against her. She surrendered to the police on Feb. 24, 2017.  “I honor Marianne with our fondest memories with the family before and even after I was unjustly deprived of my liberty.  We miss you Marianne. You will always be in our hearts,” said De Lima.
