CEBU CITY – A 67-year-old man and his seven-month pregnant daughter were shot dead by their neighbor during a heated argument past 5 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, in Barangay Cadulawan, Minglanilla town, southern Cebu.
The fatalities were identified as Alfredo Ababon Herbias and Marjorie Herbias Caparida, 30.
Alfredo’s other daughter, Florgen, 35, survived the attack but suffered a bullet wound in the abdomen.
The suspect, Vergilio Sayago, 62, was arrested by police after the incident.
Police Capt. Kalvin Jomari Golitod, chief of the Minglanilla police station, said the neighbors have not been in good terms due to a land dispute.
“They have been at odds for a long time already,” said Golitod.
Sayago showed no remorse after the attack.
Interviewed by reporters, Sayago said he wanted to kill all the family members at the time but the .357 revolver that he used in the attack malfunctioned.
“If only my firearm did not malfunction, I could have killed them all. You cannot think properly anymore when you are already fed up with what they have done. Because of what they have done to me, I do not regret what I did. I lost my patience, I've been trying to be patient,” said Sayago in Cebuano.
Sayago accused his neighbors of uprooting the coconut trees that he planted at the boundary of their respective lots.
He said he had been planting coconut trees but his neighbors kept on uprooting them.
Sayago said it was the sixth time on Saturday that his coconut trees were uprooted.
He said when he discovered on Saturday that the coconut trees that he planted were uprooted again, he went home and got his firearm.
Sayago then went to the house of the victims.
He said he confronted Alfredo but they denied they were the ones who uprooted the coconut trees.
“If they were not the ones who uprooted, they could have reprimanded the persons who did it because it was just near their backyard,” Sayago said.
Sayago said Alfredo’s daughters arrived and started nagging him.
At the height of the argument, the suspect drew a gun and started shooting the victims.
Sayago also tried to shoot Alfredo’s wife but the .357 revolver malfunctioned.
After the shooting, Sayago said he went home to change clothes.
Sayago said he planned to surrender but he chanced upon the responding police officers on his way to the police station.
He said he got the firearm from someone in exchange for chicken.
Police said charges for double murder and frustrated murder will be filed against the suspect.
