Heat check: Do you really need tint?

Pros and cons of using auto tint

Published May 12, 2023 03:11 am

Some Filipinos think auto tint is an optional expense, especially since a chunk of your life savings went into the downpayment. I would have agreed with you 20 years ago when the Earth was cooler (the planet's rate of warming is 0.18° Celsius per decade), but this heat has made me a disagreeable boy. You (and your car) need tint for various reasons, and while a few of them are of the cosmetic kind, a third of them have to do with performance and efficiency, while a few deal with your sanity. Sure, there are some cons to it, and we will detail those here so motorists like you make an informed decision about tinting your vehicle.

Cons

A vehicle without window tint.
Expensive. You are right about one thing — it is pricey. I asked around, and even with under-the-table transactions, the minimum you will have to pay is P4,000. At this rate, you might get authentic tint or fake laminates with really good 3M markings. And fake ones will not provide the same kind of protection as the real deal. Vehicle tint decreases visibility. Regardless of its shade, it will reduce the light in your retinas. Anatomy 101: light is turned into electrical signals by the photoreceptors, which then go to the brain via the optic nerve and become an image. The less light your eyes get, the harder it will be to process electrical signals your brain gets, which may cause you to miss the dog crossing the street or the pedestrian. Tint can negatively affect the resale value of your vehicle. If you decide to sell it, expect the asking price to be lower. You would be lucky to find a buyer who likes the tint shade on it just the way it is. And if they ask you to remove it before purchase, that is another expense unless you DIY it. If you do, see the next paragraph. When removing tint, it is best to leave to professionals to avoid damaging glass defogger lines.
Removing tint yourself is not a good idea. Leave that to professionals or at least skilled workers who know what they are doing. A piss-poor DIY job can leave a residue that further lowers the value and may even damage glass defogger lines.

Pros

Tint protects cabin appointments. Do you want to preserve the quality of the dashboard and prevent cracking? Use tint. Are you concerned about the upholstery fading too quickly? Use tint. Do you want the interior to look as good as new? Use tint. Sure, the roof and the glass cover you from direct exposure to UV radiation, but it is not enough. You cannot see ultraviolet A and B but feel your skin burning. That process damages the DNA in your skin cells and increases your risk of skin cancer. Other unwanted results are dark spots, wrinkles, and premature aging. At 38° Celsius, when the car is parked outside, the interior temperature can go as high as 62° Celsius. Can you imagine how long it will take to cool the cabin? Rhetoric question. Tint can reduce all that heat by as much as 70%, which improves fuel consumption and comfort for you and your passengers. Glare makes our eyes squint, which in turn causes eye strain. Do it long enough, and your facial muscles become sore and fatigue your eyes. Tint reflects sun rays and prevents reflections that cause of glare.

Kinds of tint

Dyed tint uses dyed film layers and is one of the most affordable options in the market. Unfortunately, you also get what you pay for. This type fades over time and will need a replacement after discoloration. Carbon Tint blocks heat using carbon particles. It is expensive but very effective and does not fade. Its dark hue can make it hard to see through for drivers who are used to a lighter shade. Metalized Tint has small metal particles in the film that blocks sunlight and heat. These bits and pieces may affect cellular, GPS, and RFID signals needed by modern apps and devices. Ceramic films, like the one from Solarex, are one of the best on the market but also very pricey. Its more than 95% UV and IR rejection makes it the top choice, not just for automotive applications — but even for residential, commercial, industrial, and even on Daddy's yacht. Whatever your budget is, a tint option is available, so do not dilly-dally anymore. The Philippines is a tropical country, which means it is hot 90% of the time. Tint your car; your dash and derma will thank you for it.
