The gold medal hopes of the Gilas Pilipinas women’s team took a huge blow after dropping a tough 89-68 decision over Indonesia in the women’s 5-on-5 basketball competition in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games at the Elephant Hall 2 Morodok Techo National Stadium on Friday, May 12.
In the clash between the only unbeaten squads and which could also very well determine the champions of the competitions, the Filipinas just couldn’t sustain the good start and thoroughly collapsed in the second half on their way to their first taste of defeat. The loss dimmed Gilas chances of completing a three-peat in this year's edition as Indonesia improved to a 4-0 record in the standings while dropping the Filipinas to a 2-1 slate. Gilas could only hope for the Indonesians to absorb at least two more losses in its remaining games to get a much clearer shot at the gold medal. The Nationals failed to put the clamps down on the Indonesians who unloaded a back-breaking 17-2 flurry that turned their 35-37 halftime disadvantage into a commanding 52-39 lead in the third frame. The Filipinas never recovered from there as Yuni Anggraeni and Indonesian naturalized player Kimberley Pierre Louis did most of the damage. Anggraeni finished with a game-high 24 points while Pierre Louis put up a double-double effort of 20 points and 15 rebounds. The Indonesian also dominated on all fronts, shooting way better from the field with a 48 percent clip from the field including a 36 percent from deep as compared to the Filipinas’ 36 percent shooting from the floor and measly 23 percent from the three-point territory. Janine Pontejos and Chack Cabinbin were the only double-digit scorers for Gilas with 11 and 10 points respectively. Up next for Gilas is another contending team in Thailand on Saturday, May 12.
