Classes in Albay suspended due to 12-hour power outage

LEGAZPI CITY, Albay – Classes on all levels in some areas of this province were suspended due to a 12-hour power interruption on Friday, May 12.

In an advisory, Albay Gov. Grex Lagman said that the move will prevent health hazards from the high heat index that the province is experiencing.

Areas affected by the power interruption are the town of Santo Domingo, portion of Bacacay municipality, Malilipot town, and San Miguel Island in Tabaco City. These areas are served by the Santa Misericordia Substation of the Albay Electric Cooperative (ALECO).

This city was also affected by power outage at the Bitano Substation. The towns of Daraga, Camalig, Manito, and some areas of Jovellar and Guinobatan were also affected.

According to ALECO, the power interruptions are due to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) preventive and corrective maintenance along their line.

NGCP will also conduct testing of high voltage transformer equipment in Daraga. ALECO will hold a massive line clearing, hot spot correction, and feeder tagging.

Albay is powerless from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), this city experienced 42 degrees Celsius heat index on Thursday, May 11, considered dangerous for human health.
