Marcos said this following reports that the Philippine Coast Guard intercepted a Vietnam-flagged fishing boat inside the Philippines' EEZ in the South China Sea last February. In an interview with reporters onboard Philippine Airlines Flight PR001, the President said he talked to Chinh about the incident during their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 42nd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Indonesia on Wednesday, May 10. "Nag-usap kami ng (I talked to the) Prime Minister. We have to find a way," he said on Thursday, May 11. "Sabi ko huwag ‘yung ganito na nag-aano tayo. Mag-usap tayo nang mabuti (I said we shouldn't treat each other like that. We should talk sincerely)," he added. Marcos said this was the reason why he asked Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo to work with his Vietnamese counterpart to begin talks to have an agreement that would prevent similar problems. "Hindi naman (It's not) contentiously, it's something we never have to worry about before, ngayon lang (just now)," he said. "Kailangan habang maaga, pag-usapan na natin. Para 'di magkagulo at magka-incident na nangyayari sa atin ngayon (We should talk about this this early so we could avoid trouble and similar incidents)," he added.
