Ex-Governor Teves' aide accuses Siaton mayor of harassment; Degamo, Teves' camps call for lifestyle checks
An aide of former Negros Oriental governor Henry Pryde Teves has accused Siaton Mayor Cezanne Fritz Diaz of harassing him in a confrontation on Wednesday, following the Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs’ hearings into the killing of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo.
Sen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa, chairman of the public order panel, disclosed a letter from Pastor Jerome Nalam asking the committee to reprimand Diaz over the incident to avoid future conflict from happening within the vicinity of the Senate.
Dela Rosa’s panel resumed investigating the spate of killings and attacks in Negros Oriental, including the assassination of Degamo on Thursday, May 11.
Nalam, in his letter to the committee, claimed the Siaton mayor, and his escorts approached him after the hearing and allegedly hurled expletives and malicious imputations, “accompanied by inappropriate gestures.”
Nalam’s lawyer, Atty. Rosel Erames, also requested the senator to give them a copy of the CCTV footage containing the alleged confrontation between Diaz and Nalam.
Diaz, who was present at the continuation of the hearing, admitted he talked to Nalam but denied that he harassed his former employee. The Siaton mayor has been linking Nalam to Degamo’s assassination, citing the vehicle used by the governor’s killers was used by Nalam two days before the killing happened. Nalam has been working on the side of Teveses but used to work with Gov. Degamo.
“The reason why we are here in the Senate is to seek justice. If our mind is like a warlord, we could have directly killed them immediately after (Gov. Roel) Degamo was murdered,” Diaz responded in Filipino.
Diaz claimed he told Nalam that while they were able to kill Degamo, they failed to do so even though they made an attempt to kill him three times.
After this, Dela Rosa ordered the resource persons from both the Degamo and Teves’ camp to avoid contact. The senator also ordered the Senate sergeant-at-arms to escort both sides after the panel suspends or adjourns the hearing.
Both camps continued to accuse each other afterwards, with Nalam asking the Senate panel to conduct a lifestyle check on Diaz and Pamplona Mayor Janice Degamo, wife of the slain governor.
Both mayors agreed to undergo a lifestyle check. But Mayor Degamo also requested the panel to conduct a lifestyle check and to check the bank accounts of Rhilrose Antoinette Torres and Gaspar Torres.
Rhilrose “Kitty” Torres, who accused the Degamos of unexplained wealth and suspected them of ordering to strafe their house, agreed to the lifestyle check request.
Dela Rosa responded saying the Office of the Ombudsman is the appropriate body to conduct a lifestyle check on Diaz and Degamo being incumbent government officials.
The lawmaker said the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) or the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) can conduct the lifestyle check on the Torreses and Nalam.
