BOC intercepts vessel carrying smuggled fuel off Pangasinan waters, P54M worth of diesel seized

Around P54 million worth of diesel, believed to have been smuggled into the country, were seized by intelligence agents of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) when they intercepted a vessel off the waters of Sual, Pangasinan. BOC Commissioner Bien Rubio said the estimated 1,350 kilolitres of smuggled diesel fuel were discovered when agents of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) and Enforcement and Security Service (ESS) and the Port Operations Division of the Subport of Sual conducted an inspection at MV Veronica-1 on May 4. “I commend the Port of San Fernando and the joint task force for their successful operation against smuggled fuel. This achievement is a testament to our unwavering commitment to securing our borders and protecting our economy from the adverse effects of smuggling,” said Rubio. “Rest assured that the Bureau of Customs will continue to work closely with our partner agencies to strengthen our intelligence gathering and border security measures to prevent similar attempts in the future,” he added.  CIIS Director Verne Enciso said the smuggled diesel were found in 12 compartments of the vessel, adding that the fuel has an estimated value of P54 million. “As smuggling groups have become more audacious in their activities, there is a need for strengthened coordination that would lead to more successful operations,” said Enciso.  The operation was backed by personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine Navy (PN), Philippine National Police-Maritime Group, and local police force.  He said the inspection team proceeded with the inspection following the issuance of a Pre-Lodgement Control Order (PLCO) last May 3, 2023 against the subject vessel suspected to contain smuggled fuel. Samples taken from the 12 compartments for fuel testing marked "failed" on both the first and second tests using a Mobile Fuel Analyzer, which prompted the Port of San Fernando to order the immediate seizure of the smuggled diesel and the carrying vessel in compliance with pertinent Customs laws, rules, and regulations. Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence Group Juvymax Uy highlighted how the swift action of their intelligence agents secured the necessary information to apprehend the vessel and seize the smuggled diesel.  “As long as our Customs agents and other agencies continue to be relentless, our pursuit of smuggling activities and the people behind them will succeed,” said Uy.
