Student killed, 11 others hurt in Eastern Samar road mishap

TACLOBAN CITY â€“ An 18-year-old student died while 11 other students who were all females were hurt when a pickup truck rammed into them while they were waiting for a ride home along the national road in Barangay Naparaan, Salcedo, Eastern Samar on Wednesday, May 10.

AN 18-year-old student died while 11 others were injured when a pickup truck rammed them while they were waiting for a ride home in Salcedo, Eastern Samar on Wednesday, May 10. (Radyo Pilipinas Borongan FB) The fatality was identified as April Macajeto, a student of Salcedo Vocational High School. The other victims included Grades 9 to 12 students of the school who were walking near the railings of the highway in front of their school around lunchtime. Initial investigation disclosed that the pickup truck driver identified as Manuel Waniwan, 61, of Guiuan, Eastern Samar was traveling northbound going to Barangay Malbog in Salcedo when his driven vehicle accidentally swerved to the opposite lane and hit the students. The victims were brought to the hospital and Macajeto was declared dead on arrival. Waniwan was brought to the Salcedo Municipal Police Station for proper disposition. He is now facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple serious physical injuries.
