Sibol MLBB women advance to final; Valorant crew loses steam, salvages bronze
The Sibol MLBB women’s team is now assured of at least a silver medal finish while the Valorant team couldn’t sustain its perfect start and settled for a bronze in the esports events in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games on Wednesday, May 10.
The women’s national team in MLBB women’s competition, composed of members of the pro team Omega Empress, had to shake off some jitters in the group stage where it finished second with a 1-1 record. It defeated host Cambodia but lost to Indonesia in the group stage held at the Nagaworld 2. They did bounce back though in the semifinals when it upset unbeaten Malaysia to advance to the finals where it will take on region rival Indonesia. The Sibol Valorant team, composed of Oasis Gaming pro players Bhreyanne Reyes, Xavier Juan, Jed Jamir, Nathaniel Cabero, and George Lachica, went off to a blazing start in the competitions with a perfect 5-0 record in the group stage before faltering in the playoffs. The Filipinos cooled down in the semifinals where they suffered a heartbreaking upset against Indonesia which only finished fourth in the preliminaries after recording a 2-3 slate. Surprisingly, the Indonesians dominated the Filipinos with 2-0 sweep – a 13-1 beating in the first map in Lotus before a 13-2 demolition in Ascent. Good thing though, Sibol managed to pull itself together for the bronze medal match where it vented its ire against Vietnam with a 2-0 win. The Filipinos drew the series first blood with a 13-5 victory in Ascent before surviving a late stand from the Vietnamese in Haven, 13-10.
