Here's what will happen if Teves doesn't show up after 60-day suspension

The House Committee on Ethics and Privileges may move to impose a new disciplinary action against Negros Oriental 3rd district Rep. Arnolfo "Arnie" Teves Jr. if he fails to show up for duty after his 60-day suspension. Thus, said House Speaker Martin Romualdez in a statement Tuesday, afternoon, May 10, or just four days before the lapse of the embattled solon's suspension due to "disorderly behavior". "Should Cong. Arnie continue to defy the return to work order after the lapse of the 60-day period of his suspension, the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges may be constrained to reconvene and consider another possible disciplinary action against him," Romualdez said. "This is our recourse in order to preserve the dignity, integrity and reputation of the House of Representatives," added Romualdez, Leyte's 1st district representative and Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) president. The 300-strong House unanimously handed down a 60-day suspension on Teves last March 15 via plenary vote. The penalty will have lapsed by May 14, a Sunday. The Committee on Ethics and Privileges, chaired by COOP-NATCCO Party-list Rep. Felimon Espares, was the panel that recommended the 60-day suspension. The next harshest penalty is expulsion. Teves has been out of the country since Feb. 28. He is considered absent without official leave from the House. Teves, a former deputy speaker, is tagged as the mastermind of the March 4 assassination of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo. Although he has maintained his innocence, he has refused to come back home to the Philippines for fear of his life.
