For the third consecutive day, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) recorded the highest daily heat index reading observed across the country at Ambulong Station in Tanauan, Batangas on Wednesday, May 10. Based on PAGASA’s monitoring, Wednesday’s highest heat index, or temperature as perceived by the human body, was 45 degrees Celsius (°C), which was recorded in Ambulong Station in Tanauan, Batangas. This is the third day in a row that the PAGASA station in Batangas topped the list of the highest daily heat index. The heat index in Batangas reached 47°C and 46°C on May 8 and 9, respectively. A heat index of 42°C to 51°C indicates imminent “danger,” as “heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely,” and “heat stroke is probable with continued activity,” according to PAGASA. Moreover, 18 other stations registered dangerously high heat indices on Wednesday. These were Catarman, Northern Samar (45°C); Guiuan, Eastern Samar (45°C); Dagupan City, Pangasinan (44°C); Roxas City, Capiz (44°C); Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte (43°C); Iba, Zambales (43°C); Legazpi City, Albay (43°C); Masbate City, Masbate (43°C); San Jose, Occidental Mindoro (43°C); Tacloban City, Leyte (43°C); Borongan, Eastern Samar (42°C); Butuan City, Agusan del Norte (42°C); Clark Airport, Pampanga (42°C); Daet, Camarines Norte (42°C); Davao City, Davao del Sur (42°C); Juban, Sorsogon(42°C); Sangley Point, Cavite (42°C); and Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur (42°C). Meanwhile, the highest heat index measured since March 1, 2023 reached 49°C on April 16 in Guiuan, Eastern Samar. According to PAGASA, the easterlies, or warm air from the Pacific Ocean, and localized thunderstorms will be the dominant weather systems in the country until the weekend. In the next 24 hours, most of the country will continue to experience hot weather in the morning and isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening. The public is advised to exercise caution during severe thunderstorms, as these can result in landslides or flash floods, especially in areas that are vulnerable to these hazards.
