Suspended Negros Oriental Representative Arnolfo "Arnie" Teves Jr. has apparently no intention to come home and might just wait for the next administration before surfacing. "Wala (none). Wala talaga siguro (there could be no intention of coming back). Just like mga previous people in the same situation with him. Maghihintay na lang na (He will wait) after this administration saka mag-surface (before he might surface),’’ Senator Ronald "Bato’’ dela Rosa on the rejection by the Timor Leste government of Teves’ request for an asylum. Dela Rosa gave this statement to Senate reporters before he and members of the Senate public order an dangerous drugs committee went into hours-long closed door session on what to do in the scheduled fourth committee hearing this morning. Asked whether Teves’ flight could be an indication of guilt, dela Rosa, committee chairman, replied: "Most likely. An ordinary person will think that way." Teves is the principal figure in the current government investigation on the March brazen assassination of Negros Oriental Gov, Roel Degamo and other political assassinations. Seven other persons who were at the Degamo residence at the time were also killed. Since then, Teves had sought medical procedure in the United States and was later spotted in Cambodia and later in South Korea. The dela Rosa committee had rejected Teves’ request that he give his side through ZOOM/teleconferencing but asked him to return to the Philippines where there is still no warrant for his arrest. Asked his thoughts are on Teves’ request for asylum dela Rosa replied: "Seeking asylum for what? Yung political reasons lang naman yung pwedeng i-grant, political asylum, hindi criminal asylum (request for political asylum could be granted but not on criminal cases). ‘Di ba? I don’t know kung ayaw niya ma-justify (I don’t know if he can justify it) Kaya nga siguro na-deny dahil baka hindi na-justify (His asylum request could have been rejected because he cannot justify it),’’ he said. Resuming the committee hearing at 11:46 A. M. today after the closed door session, dela Rosa said the last hearing on "April 19 was, without a doubt, one of the most gripping that I have ever had the privilege of holding. Gripping, thrilling, but sadly, and for the most part, for the wrong and unjust reasons." Dela Rosa, a former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, said Negros Oriental province is one of the most beautiful political territory, for its seas and mountains, among others. "This is precisely why it is so heartbreaking to know that a place as beautiful as Negros Oriental could be enveloped with such darkness – killings, land-grabbings, illegal gambling, and countless allegations of violence, many of them political in nature," he pointed out. "During the previous hearings, our committee was able to get a clearer picture of several cases that disturbed the once peaceful province of Negros Oriental," he stressed. Dela Rosa had cried over the grip politicians had over the police and other government agencies. "Today, we aim to address some recurring issues so that your Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs can identify the needed legislations and policy recommendations to restore and maintain peace and order in Negros Oriental," he added.
