Close to 6,000 Labor Day protesters gather in Manila - MPD


Nearly 6,000 protesters gathered in several areas in Manila in celebration of Labor's Day on Monday, May 1.

According to the situation report (SITREP) of the Manila Police District (MPD), a total of 5,780 members from 14 labor groups flocked to the city to stage their protests, as of this writing.

The MPD said members of Kilusan and West Philippine Sea (WPS) held a program at Isetann Recto at around 8:30 a.m.

"Ipaglaban ang nakabubuhay na sahod, sahod itaas, presyo ibaba. Trabaho regular, hindi contractual (Fighting for a reasonable and livable salary, raise the salary, lower the prices. Regular work, not contractual), " the members chanted while carrying flags and placards bearing their messages to the government.

More than 3,000 members of the Federation of Free Workers (FFW), Partido Manggagawa (PM), Public Services International (PSI), and Association of Women Workers in the Construction Industry (AWVCI) also hit the road along España Blumentrit.

Members of the Communication Workers of the Philippines (CWP) also held a program at the Supreme Court of the Philippines in Ermita, Manila at around 9 a.m. to call for an end to contractualization or "endo" in commemoration of Labor Day.

Meanwhile, the city government closed the southbound lane from Kalaw to the United States Embassy on Roxas Boulevard.

The MPD advised motorists to stay updated on the city's traffic advisories to avoid gridlocks and inconvenience.

It said crowds are expected to increase throughout the day.
