VP Duterte calls for kindness, bayanihan among Pinoys

As the country commemorates Araw Ng Kagitingan or Day of Valor on Sunday, April 9, Vice President Sara Duterte called on Filipinos to show “gallant acts of kindness and bayanihan” and work together to strengthen democratic institutions.

In her message, Duterte recalled how the Battle of Bataan, which led to the fall of Bataan to Japanese troops during World War II, “left an indelible mark of Filipino patriotism, courage, and resilience in the face of insurmountable adversity.”

“Today’s Day of Valor is a firm reminder of the indomitable Filipino spirit that is able to selflessly endure the most grueling situations for the sake of liberty and in the name of our cherished freedoms,” Duterte wrote.

“As we honor the heroic courage of our fallen heroes of Bataan, may we be inspired to demonstrate gallant acts of kindness and bayanihan among our kababayan from the most vulnerable sectors,” she added.

The occasion, she stressed, should empower Filipinos to be brave in rising to the challenges of nation-building, especially amid the “enduring fight against the social ills that corrupt the core of governance.”

“Let us walk together on the same path of bravery as we pursue socioeconomic advancement, uphold lasting reforms, and encourage one another in promoting the deep love of country that is founded on our shared quest for a brighter tomorrow for every Filipino,” Duterte said.

The Vice President also enjoined Filipinos to work harder to pursue everyone’s goal for a progressive country born from the courage and heroism shown by the nation’s heroes.

Araw Ng Kagitingan falls on April 9 every year. It commemorates the heroism of Filipino fighters during the second world war.

Despite the Fall of Bataan, historians believe the Filipino and American soldiers who stood their ground slowed down Japanese troops and allowed the Allies to prepare for conflicts in the Pacific.
