The names of the two fatalities – a 12-year-old girl, and a 13-year-old boy – were withheld. Lt. Col. Roberto Indiape Jr., Sagay police chief, said the truck driven by Vengie Noynay, 35, of Barangay Rafaela Barrera, was loaded with 15 passengers. Indiape said the truck was allegedly speeding and transporting home the passengers who came from an outing. The truck driver, who was reportedly drunk, was advised by his relatives and their other companions to slow down, but he kept his speed, causing him to hit the tricycle and overshot into the sugarcane field, Indiape said. The two kids, who were sitting on the bumper of the truck, fell from the vehicle and were declared dead in the hospital, according to Indiape. The three wounded persons suffered minor injuries and were already discharged from the hospital, he added. When police responded, Noynay acted unruly and allegedly punched a policeman while the traffic investigator luckily evaded the attack. Police Staff Sgt. Ronnie Gamboa suffered injuries in the nose and face, according to Indiape. Indiape said that Noynay’s 33-year-old relative, who was also reportedly drunk, was also involved, when he allegedly tried to prevent the police from pacifying the commotion. Charges for direct assault will be filed against Noynay and his companion while policemen are waiting for the decision of the victims’ family regarding the filing of additional cases against Noynay pertaining to the accident, Indiape said.
