One dead, seven injured in Negros road mishap

BACOLOD CITY – A woman died while seven others, including a Chinese national, were injured after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) collided with a tricycle in Barangay 21, Victorias City, Negros Occidental on Black Saturday, April 8.

Killed in the accident was Marjorie Magallanes, 36, of Barangay 14. Capt. Genus David, deputy chief of the Victorias City Police Station, said that Magallanes and her six family members were on their way home when an SUV driven by a 38-year-old Chinese national crashed into their tricycle. The family, including three minors and the tricycle driver, came from Visita Iglesia, according to David. David said the SUV driver was believed to be speeding on its way to the southern part of the province when he lost control over the vehicle, overlapped into the opposite lane, and slammed into the tricycle. David said the SUV driver claimed that the area was not well-lighted and that he was under the influence of liquor. He was with his wife and their friend in the vehicle when the accident happened, David added. Magallanes was declared dead in the hospital. Her six companions and the Chinese couple’s 32-year-old friend were taken to a hospital here. Policemen are waiting for the decision of the victims regarding the filing of case against the Chinese driver who is detained at the police station.
