Four students, laborer die, one companion survives in drowning incident in Lemery, Batangas
LEMERY, Batangas – What was supposed to be a mere stroll along the beach turned tragic as four teenage students, three of them female, and laborer died after they drowned, while their only other companion survived on a sad Black Saturday afternoon, April 8, in this town.
The police, who received the report on the incident from Batangas Provincial Hospital at around 5 p.m., conducted an investigation and found out that the victims were walking along the shallow part of the seawater in Barangay Sambal Ilaya in this town when suddenly they got into the deep portion.
The five strollers sank altogether, and drowned, while the other one survived.
The Batangas Police Provincial Office withheld the names of the victims – a 16-year-old male and three females aged 17, 18, and 11.
The other victim who died in the incident was identified as Mark John Espulgar, 23, single, laborer, while the lone survivor was identified as Danilo Tubal, 47, a welder.
All the victims were residents of Barangay Sampa, Santa Teresita, Batangas.
The three minor victims together with Tubal were initially rescued by the concerned citizen and brought to the hospital but the three minors were declared dead on arrival by the attending physician Dr. Eric Barret while Tubal was revived and is now in good condition.
At 6:25 p.m., the 11-year-old victim and Espulgar were found by the rescue team of Lemery during a search and rescue operation and were brought to the hospital but were declared dead on arrival.
