MPD conducts 'Bisikleta Iglesia' during Holy Week
The Manila Police District (MPD) conducted a simultaneous bicycle patrol around the city churches from April 5 to 7 to ensure the safety and security of the people during Holy Week.
Maj. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo led the "Bisiklita Iglesia" along with the operatives of MPD and the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO).
The MPD said some bicycle enthusiasts volunteered in visiting and inspecting areas in the city where religious activities were set to take place.
Some of the parishes they visited were the Manila Cathedral, San Agustin, Quiapo, and Sta. Cruz Churches.
According to the MDP, at least 8,000 policemen were deployed in Quiapo Church to secure the Black Nazarene motorcade on Good Friday, which drew more than 50,000 devotees.
“The MPD is always prepared and vigilant in maintaining the peace and order in our community in order to pre-empt crime perpetrators during this Lenten Season and summer vacation,” said MPD director Brig. Gen Andre Dizon.
The bicycle patrol is a regular morning activity of MPD. It was initiated by Dizon when he assumed the post in 2022.
The director has instructed the policemen to drive bicycles to guard public parks, streets, and other populated areas in the city.
