So yields to Carlsen

Wesley So won’t be matching his podium finish in the Airthings Masters of the Champions Chess Tour last February. The former Fischer-Random king and two-time United States champion just failed to muster anything and was just utterly outplayed by his Norwegian counterpart. So started the tournament by edging Armenian-born US bet Levon Aronian, 2.5-1.5, in the winner’s quarterfinals, but was sent back to earth the next day by fellow American Hikaru Nakamura with an emphatic 2.5-1.5 loss. So was sent sprawling down the loser’s quarterfinals where he was eventually shown the door by Carlsen. Interestingly, Carlsen was booted out himself after a catastrophic mouse slip in Armageddon play that allowed Nakamura to escape with the win in their winner’s finale and barge into the grand finals. There, Nakamura will battle another United States bet in Fabiano Caruana, who made it through by smashing the former to submission, 2-5.5, in their winners’ finals duel. Nakamura was eventually sent down to the losers group but resurrected back following his shock win over Carlsen.
