Food poisoning, 4 vehicular accidents recorded this Holy Week – NDRRMC
Six elementary students suffered from food poisoning in Misamis Occidental after they allegedly ate sunflower seeds while at least seven individuals were injured in four separate vehicular accidents this Holy Week, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Good Friday, April 7.
Even during the Holy Week break, Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno, executive director of NDRRMC, ordered all regional and local DRRM units nationwide to step up monitoring of incidents so they could readily respond to emergencies.
In a situational report, the NDRRMC said six Grade 6 pupils in Brgy. Mansabay Bajo, Lopez Jaena, Misamis Occidental complained of "abdominal pain related to food poisoning after consuming sunflower seeds" on April 3, Holy Monday.
“The students were brought to RHU (regional health unit) Lopez Jaena for medical treatment and later sent to their residences,” the NDRRMC said without identifying the victims, who are all nine-year-old students at Masabay Bajo Elementary School.
Meanwhile, five teenagers sustained minor scratches after figuring in a vehicular accident in Brgy. Catayagan, Santa Lucia, Ilocos Sur also on Holy Monday.
According to the NDRRMC, a big bike and “kurong-kurong” (sidecar) boarded by the victims collided around 10:55 p.m.
The victims were identified as John Joshua Lapyao, 15; John Mark Sunie, 19; Dhion Jubac, 15; Adrian Cobales, 16; and Mark Joey De Guzman, 16. All of them are residents of Ilocos Sur.
In Bukidnon, a vehicular accident occurred along Sayre Highway at P-1 Base Camp in Maramag town around 2 a.m. on Holy Tuesday, April 4. The unnamed victim was given first aid and brought to Bukidnon Provincial Hospital for further treatment.
Another vehicular accident was reported in Brgy. Libtong, Tagudin, Ilocos Sur at 1:04 a.m. on Holy Wednesday, April 5, where a certain Edwin Mendoza, a resident of Rosario, Pangasinan, suffered from multiple abrasion and back pain in a collision between a motorcycle and private car.
Further, responders assisted in securing several tourists and a cuchero (coachman) when their kalesa (horse-drawn carriage) got damaged while they were touring in Brgy. 1 (Boardwalk), Vigan, Ilocos Sur around 5:40 p.m. also on Holy Wednesday.
“As our nation solemnly observes the Holy Week, keep in mind the safety of our families and homes,” Nepomuceno said.
“Check the vehicles you will use when you travel, list emergency hotlines in your destination, secure your homes, and stay safe,” he added.
