Why Good Friday is good

Published Apr 6, 2023 04:07 pm
Today is Good Friday, a special day to remember for the Christendom in observance of the day Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross of Calvary. So what is good about Good Friday, what is good about the death of Jesus Christ, the Son of God? While Jesus Christ died a gruesome death, we should rejoice rather than grieve over it as His death on the cross spared mankind from eternal condemnation. Because of the futile ways we inherited from our forebears in the Garden of Eden, we were destined for eternal condemnation. As it is written in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” If all of us have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, what is the consequence? How could we close the gap between God and men? How could we avoid eternal condemnation? According to Roman 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. While we are all sinners, God showed His love for mankind when He sacrificed his only Son, who died for our sins so that we may be saved from eternal condemnation. This is the reason Good Friday is good. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).” And according to 1 Peter 3:18, “For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.” By shedding His blood on the cross of Calvary on Good Friday some 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins. As it is written in Galatians 3:13-15, “Christ paid the price to free us from the curse that the laws in Moses’ teachings bring by becoming cursed instead of us — for the Scripture says — ‘Everyone who is hung on a tree is cursed.’ — Christ paid the price so that the blessing promised to Abraham would come to all the people of the world through Jesus Christ and we would receive the promised Spirit through faith.” Gruesome as His death might be, Jesus Christ’s death on the cross bridge the gap between God and mankind. Because of sin, we were separated from God. But by sacrificing His only Son to die and pay the price for our sins, God the Father gave Jesus Christ as our bridge to Him. This makes Jesus Christ’s death on Good Friday good. As Vijay Thangiah, a Christian from India, puts it, “Yes, we call it Good Friday because on that day our salvation became a reality. What happened then was truly good—and Jesus did it out of love. The term "good" as applied to Good Friday is an Old English expression meaning holy. It's often called Holy Friday also. Some also believe it developed from an older name, ‘God’s Friday.’” Good Friday, according to online Bible platform YouVersion, “is good news because Jesus' death announces that there is forgiveness for all sins. His blood pulls back the curtain of God's mercy and now all people can be forgiven and saved from a death that would otherwise be deserved.” So Good Friday is good as we have Jesus Christ as our bridge to God the Father.
