The Filipinas and the Vietnamese found themselves testing each other’s mettle in Group A where they were joined by Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia while Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore and Laos were bracketed together in Group B following the results of the draw on Wednesday, April 5. The Philippines and Vietnam have been on each other’s throats in the past competitions with the latter defeating the former in the semifinals of the 31st Southeast Asian Games before eventually winning the gold medal in its home turf in Hanoi. The Filipinas though managed to exact their revenge in the AFF Women’s Championship when they sent the Vietnamese packing in the semifinals before crowning themselves as champions of the regional tiff. On the men’s side, the U-22 Azkals team was drawn in Group A along with host Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar and Timor-Leste, avoiding an early matchup against last SEA Game gold and silver medalists, Vietnam and Thailand, which both landed in Group B. They are joined by Malaysia, Laos and Singapore. The football tournaments kick off on April 29 a full week ahead of the formal opening of the regional games on May 5.
